SIX SENTENCE STORIES
THE CUE WORD OF THE WEEK IS!…
EXACT
Mrs. Exacto
“Good morning, I see you are scanning the help wanted advertisements so I guess you’re handing in your resignation like me,” Emma remarked.
“Yes, our Mrs. Exacto will be sharing another one of her bad days with us today,” Jennie said.
“I guess you heard the saying ‘the straw that broke the camel’s back, ‘ right?”
“Well, I handed her a typed document, she laid it on her desk, yanked open the desk drawer, whipped out a ruler, measured the words on the document then looked at me saying, ‘every document that leaves this office needs to be centered in the middle of the page and this document is off centered by 1/8 th of an inch!’ “
“She did break the camel’s back!”
“I rest my case.”

Unfortunately, this story is real. The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
Ha, ha. Great story. I had such an experience with a teacher in a writing class who spent much time, in red ink, telling me there was to be a full one inch indentation for paragraphs and all work must be double spaced with no half extra space at the end of the paragraph. The trivialness, yet exactness, cut me to the core.

Thank you! I can remember teachers like that also. They loved using that red pen and they got carried away with nick picking.

Oh good grief! People like that are a nightmare to try to work with! I don’t blame them for leaving.

Haha! This is funny! It reminds me of a boss that told me letters had to start 1″ exactly from the top of the page! I put a “rule” on my wall that said, “ALL LETTERS MUST BE EXACTLY 1″ FROM THE TOP OF THE PAGE.” He saw my rule and wrote on it, “Oh brother!” Haha! I had a little fun with it. This is a great story Jessie!

Ha! Ha! The experiences one receives in the work force can be quite amusing. I remember when I was in high school taking typing, we had to put our initials at the bottom of each letter we typed…which I did, but received it back with a big F on the paper. It was a perfect paper…I questioned it and she said I was not suppose to put JOB on the letter…(we called the assignments jobs) …but when she learned that my initials were actually JOB…I received my A on the paper! 🙂

Hahaha! I’m so glad your F was changed to an A! I can’t (can) believe that teacher couldn’t figure out those were your initials! Duh! Hahaha! Fooled her! 😀 😀

That kind of feedback – if that’s what it is – can definitely be damaging. But, just to play devil’s advocate for the other side…without editing and precision, some things would be a terrible disaster. What’s wrong with a little attention to detail? I wish my former students had put care and precision into their work more often…

I agree that editing and precision is necessary, but there is a thing called ….extreme! Sometimes …extreme can have the opposite results from students. A lot depends on the situation, student, and teacher.

Very true! I figured if that was the worst thing I did….not measure the words with a ruler! I was doing real well!

She was, and I never worked for one like her again. Usually, when there are employees quitting all the time, that is a sign of mismanagement on the part of the employer. I’ve been on the other side of the coin as well….worked for an employer where things were managed well and there was always a waiting list of people anxious for an opportunity to at least get interviewed for a job there.
