THE BICYCLE

Sunday Photo Fiction – October 25th 2015

Sunday Photo Fiction is a weekly writing challenge where a photo is used as a prompt for a piece of fiction using around 200 words. The piece doesn’t have to centre around exactly what the photo is, it can be just used as a basis for a story. This photo is a Penny Farthing replica  sited on the entrance of a hotel.

THE BICYCLE

“Trevor, your dad’s bicycle is really cool!” Bret said.

“I know,” Trevor remarked.

“Have you ridden it?”

“No, because it’s too high and I need help getting on it.”

“I can help you.”

“Alright, I can climb on this old box and get on while you hold the bike still.”

They heard Trevor’s dad calling them.

“Quick! Bret, let me get down from this box!”

Trevor’s dad walked in and said, “you can’t ride it, it’s too dangerous. If you fell off you could be seriously injured.  Your legs would be caught under the handle bars. It’s very old and you can’t buy this kind anymore.  They named it “ordinary” because there was no other kind like it.”

Trevor and Bret chimed in, “cool!”

“It was given the nick-name Penny-Farthing.  A penny representing the front wheel, and a coin smaller in size and value, the farthing, representing the rear wheel.”

Trevor and Bret chimed in, “cool!”

  1. Jessie, I had a notice that you are following me, so I hopped over to take a look. I’d be glad to travel along together for a time so I’m clicking your follow also. How did you find me? I don;t do photos, but I enjoy your paintings. I’ve signed up for new blogging classes next month. Do you take them? Anyway I’ll be in contact.

    • Hi! Glad to meet you. I found it on another site. I’m glad you enjoy my paintings. I love to paint and draw, but haven’t done a lot of painting lately. I’ve been too busy with other things…my blog especially. I love writing and joining the challenges. I still have a lot to learn about the system, but I keep trying and eventually figure some of it out. I am unable to devote time on the blogging classes, but hope to one day. I am out of town two days a week and spend the other part of the week catching up on rest, home things, and activities. Thank you for stopping in and following my site. I look forward to reading more of yours.

  3. Great story Jessie. I like the health and safety aspect. Not that anybody worried about such things when this bike first came out, they just got back on and bled down the road 😉

Great history lesson as well 🙂 Thank you
