This week’s photo prompt is provided by TJ Paris. Thank you TJ!

“Jon, what are we doing today?” asked Shelby.

“I can’t leave the back yard, but we can play around the flower garden.  I will show you my friend if he’s around.”  Jon answered.

“What friend?”

“I call him Speedy.  He lives in the flower garden.”

“What?  How can he do that and why is his name Speedy?”

“He’s a butterfly and he can fly twelve miles an hour but only if his body temperature is at least 86 degrees.”

“What else can he do?”

“He sees red, green and yellow, and he never sleeps.  He just becomes inactive and he doesn’t have eyelids.  He never takes a bath in water because he could lose his colored scales and the ability to sense odors.  He takes a sun bath to raise his body temperature.”

“Where does he sleep?”

“Under the leaves.”

“Wow!!  Did he tell you all this?”

“No, my mom read me a book about butterflies.”

  1. That’s an adorable story. I can just imagine two kids talking and the boy trying to show off with what he knows. And of course he believes he’s right, his Mom read it to him. Great idea for a story!

  2. I just learned many things about butterflies that I did not know, a very educational piece and enjoyable too! Thanks for the lesson and the wonderful story!!

  3. I agree with everyone! This is a great play on how kids can soak up interesting information and help teach each other. Also, I love how he’s retelling the info like the butterfly is a superhero! Excellent job
