Starting Over

Bernie said, “good morning sunshine, breakfast is ready.”

Sadie loved it when he called her that.  She said, “sunshine just can not eat another peanut butter and jelly sandwich!”

“Oh! But I have a surprise for you, we have your favorite cereal with cold milk, ” he said.

“But how?” she replied.

“I went to the store real early this morning,” he said.

Sadie and Bernie fell in love with the area.  The view of the bridge and surrounding area was spectacular.

After losing his job with the car manufacturing business, having excessive medical bills, their house foreclosed on and cars repossessed, they moved south.

They lived among the elements outside, worked small jobs and spent as little money as possible.

Now, they had enough money to afford moving into a small rented room.  They would continue to seek full-time employment, save their money, and one day have a house and start a family.

  1. Sweet love story and good that this problem is at the beginning of their marriage instead of after having a family. I enjoyed the story Jessie. I noticed one thing, in the second paragraph, I think that is suppose to be “a peanut BUTTER and jelly sandwich.” Great story and thank you for participating in FFfAW challenge! 🙂

  2. These two seem a perfect couple. Not only do they have deep feelings for each other, but they are both hard workers, prepared to live on little until they have enough to move on to better things A heartwarming story, Jessie. .

      • That’s so true, Jessie. Homeless people so often get thought badly of, for no other reason than simply being homeless. As you say, many aren’t homeless by choice and do work hard to improve their situation. That came across well in your story.

  3. Lovely story! These are testing times in any relationship. In fact when people have less, they enjoy their little comforts together, esp. as they happen to have more time.
When life gets busy, there are all material things but often no time.

    • Yes, sometimes the hardships cause people to break up, but others will form a real bond and work things out. And, there is a lot to be said for the quote..”less is more”

  4. These days…takes two.
Some countries have multi-generational mortgages – I’m kind of used to not having three generations live under one roof. Though for a time my MIL lived with us…

Yep, I think we all ate lots of grilled cheese and peanut butter starting out 🙂

  5. Life is rough when you are young and old….each has their own struggles. It’s how we handle the struggles that is important and the thing that makes us grow stronger…or .. can at least. Sometimes you just have to make do with what you have. I had my share of peanut butter ….and it didn’t kill me either. Thank you for reading and commenting. 🙂

  6. Thank you so much! There is so much of this type of existence these days I just wanted to stress that it is not always the people’s choice to live like that and goals can be set and reached, but it will not be easy, but it certainly can be done.
